JOIN OUR BANNED BOOK READING CHALLENGE!

Book Bans are on the rise nationwide - even in communities like ours.

Bad News: Research shows that a rise in book bans anywhere creates a climate of fear for teachers & families everywhere.

Good News: Building community and clear support for the freedom to read helps combat the silent retreat from challenged material. Join us!

Calling all readers! Calling all book lovers! Calling all champions for truth!

More than 1500 unique titles were banned across the nation last school year (22-23). We are aiming to find 500 people in our community to commit to reading a challenged book during the month of October.
Help demonstrate that YA2A is on the side of free expression and the freedom to learn by joining our Oct Reading Challenge!

Curious to learn more about the state of book bans in public schools?

PEN America is a 100 year old non-profit whose goal is to raise awareness for the protection of free expression in the United States and worldwide through the advancement of literature and human rights. They have taken the lead in tracking and researching the rise in censorship in our public schools across the nation. Their bi-annual reports are the clearest picture of national book banning efforts. Think it’s not rising in MI? Think again.

“It’s about whether someone’s ready access to ideas has been denied or diminished in a public institution and why.”

— Jonathan Friedman
